Keyhunt Strategy Guide

The Basics

The basic goal of key hunt (kh) is very simple: collect all the keys and bring them together.

A game of keyhunt (KH) proceeds in "rounds". At the beginning of a round, one player on each team receives a key. If you receive a key, you will see an indicator on the HUD. If one of your teammates receives a key, you will see the large green KEY CARRIER sprite, shown in the table below, above his head. At first, you will not be able to see the enemy key carriers. After a few seconds, you will see the message "scanning frequency range". Once this is complete, the location of enemy key carriers and dropped keys will be revealed by the other waypoint sprites, also shown in the table below. In order to score, your team must collect all the keys by killing the enemy key carriers and picking up the dropped keys. Once your team is in possession of them all, you will see a message that all keys are in your team's hands. More importantly, each key carrier on your team will see the RUN HERE sprite above any other teammate who is also a key carrier. Your key carriers must then rush towards each other as fast as possible. Once the keys are close enough together, they will flash and disappear and your team will be awarded points proportional to the number of keys. Of course, if a single person on your team collects all the keys then there is no need to run anywhere because the keys are already together.

If an enemy team gains possession of all the keys, you will see a message telling you so and that you should interfere. You must then stop the enemy key carriers from reaching each other to prevent the enemy team scoring.

The current round will end once the keys have been captured or if a key falls of a map or is left dropped for a certain period of time. A new round will be started and this will continue until one team wins or time runs out.

You can also gain points by knocking an enemy key carrier off the map so that his key is lost and a new round begins. If a key carrier falls of the map by himself, all other teams will be rewarded with points. Capturing the keys always give the most points though.

The Waypoint Sprites

Waypoint sprites can be seen anywhere on the map, even behind walls. Paying attention and reacting to these sprites is the single most important thing in KH. Failure to do so will not only mean that you will lose, it will also make you a burden to your team.

SpriteDescription

keycarrierownThis sprite shows you the location of teammates who are carrying keys. No matter what color team you're on, your own key carriers will always be indicated by this green sprite.

keycarrierredkeycarrierbluekeycarrieryellowkeycarrierpink These sprites will show you the location of the enemy key carriers. The color of the sprite shows you which team the enemy key carrier belongs to. This is very useful if you wish to adopt an effective strategy.

droppedkey This sprite will show you the location of any dropped keys.

runhere Once your team is in possession of all the keys, each key carrier on your team will see this sprite instead of the green KEY CARRIER sprite above other teammate key carriers. The key carriers must meet up with each other in order to score and should move towards each other as quickly as possible. When you see the RUN HERE sign, run there as fast as you can.

Priorities

Focus on the enemy key carriers.

The only enemies that really matter are the enemy key carriers. If you waste time killing other enemies, you give the enemy key carriers time to collect the keys and win. The main exception to this rule is to protect your own key carriers whenever possible. Do not ignore enemies that are chasing your key carrier.

Focus on the highest scoring enemy team.

The highest scoring enemy team is the one that poses the greatest threat. You should always go after that team's key carriers first. The reason is that while you are attempting to kill an enemy key carrier, you will weaken him and make him easier to kill for other enemy teams. If you go after a lower scoring team's key carrier, the higher scoring team may swoop in at the last second and collect the key(s), meaning that you effectively helped that team increase its lead. Whenever you come across 2 enemy key carriers trying to kill each other, always attack the one from the higher-scoring team.

Know when to run.

Sometimes the best strategy is not to attack the enemy key carriers but to avoid them until they have been weakened or killed by your teammates or players from another enemy team. This is especially true when you are playing against stronger players. Often, if you are attentive enough, you can let your enemies do your work for you and show up at just the right moment in order to capture the keys.
